Professor Richard Lindzen explains his controversial Iris Effect hypothesis.
Working with satellite observations, Lindzen and colleagues examined how cloud cover changes with surface temperature. He argues that when parts of the tropics warm, cloud cover can shrink in a way that allows more heat to escape — creating a negative feedback that offsets much of the warming effect attributed to CO2.
He also says the idea helps address the “faint young Sun” problem: early in Earth’s history, the Sun was weaker, yet the oceans did not freeze.
Whether accepted or disputed, this is one of Lindzen’s most important scientific arguments.
