Warren Mosler challenges the common claim that government deficits are a “burden on our grandchildren.”
He argues that when a government spends more than it taxes, the remaining money does not disappear — it remains in the private sector. In his framing, public debt is not a moral monster hiding under the bed, but mostly an accounting record: money the government has spent and not yet taxed back.
Mosler also explains government bonds in simple terms: not as some mysterious debt trap, but as money moved from a checking account to a securities or savings account at the central bank. The real question, he says, is not the size of the deficit itself, but whether government spending creates too much demand relative to real resources.
