In this episode, I speak with Warren Mosler, one of the key figures behind Modern Monetary Theory — MMT.
The topic is money, but not in the way it is usually explained to us.
Who actually creates money?
Do taxes really finance government spending?
Is public debt truly a burden on future generations?
Can a government that issues its own currency go bankrupt?
What does the euro mean for Croatia?
And why does Mosler argue that deficits, public debt, inflation and interest rates are often understood backwards?
In this conversation, we go through the central ideas of Modern Monetary Theory: the difference between a currency issuer and a currency user, the relationship between taxation and government spending, the meaning of public debt, the role of central banks, inflation, interest rates, the eurozone, trade deficits, universal basic income, artificial intelligence, financial crises and the digital euro.
A particularly important part of the discussion concerns Croatia and the eurozone. Mosler explains why eurozone member states no longer issue their own national currencies, but instead use the euro — and why, in such a system, the role of the European Central Bank becomes decisive.
We also discuss the digital euro. Mosler acknowledges that central bank digital currency may bring greater payment efficiency, but he also points to the serious questions of privacy and political control. Because money is not only a technical issue. It is also a question of freedom.
This is a conversation that not everyone will accept easily — and they do not have to. But if we want to speak seriously about economics, public debt, inflation and the future of money, we first have to understand how the system actually works, instead of simply repeating phrases from textbooks written for a different monetary era.
