In this highlight, Warren Mosler explains one of the simplest MMT arguments: money begins when the state creates a tax obligation.
He uses a property-tax example. If the government imposes a tax that must be paid in its own currency, people suddenly need that currency. That need creates demand for money — and allows the government to hire people and mobilize real resources.
Mosler’s point is not that taxes “fund” spending in the household sense. His point is that taxes create demand for the currency and help regulate spending power in the economy.
He also connects this to the debate over universal basic income and AI. In his view, giving people money without understanding the role of taxation can become dangerous if it destroys the structure that gives the currency value in the first place.
